“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

Burning With A Dream

I’ll never forget the moment I began to dream of a new Jesus movement. Away at a youth conference, surrounded by worship, my face buried in the carpet, I begged God to let me be part of his mission. The verse at the top of this chapter was branded on my spirit that day and something fundamentally shifted. All my previous ambitions were stripped away by an encounter with God’s love. The only thing that remained was a fire deep inside to see Jesus lifted up in every nation. Since then, there have been many such moments, but I’ll never forget where it began.

Perhaps you’ve found this blog because you too have had a defining moment like this. God is writing a similar story in your life and filling your imagination with his dreams. If so, welcome to the New Jesus Movement. I truly believe that we are connected in a profound way with something epic God is about to do in the earth. And you and I get to be PART of it.

The Movement Ahead

I believe we are on the verge of the greatest move of God in history: a new Jesus Movement for a new generation. In the 1960’s, the greatest and most recent revival in America broke out: a generation of hippies deeply unsatisfied with what the world had to offer discovered the beauty, power and love of Jesus. And the world has never been the same since. I believe not only CAN this happen again. I believe it WILL and MUST. Let me briefly explain why:

Why A New Jesus Movement?

Much like today, The Jesus Movement began in an era of great darkness and doubt. Culture had declared that God was dead and the Beatles were more famous than Jesus. Sex, drugs and rock and roll were the anthem of the youth of America. Rebellion was a rising tide. Immorality was the new norm. And yet out of this great darkness, God breathed and began one of the greatest revivals in our history. Hunger for Jesus awoke in the hearts of a sleeping generation, radically unsatisfied by the unfulfilled promises of their altars of worship. And at the sound of a few bold voices proclaiming Jesus, a Movement was born.

This movement was truly remarkable: organic and God honoring. Humble and yet bold. Community focused and yet not introspective. It birthed beautiful churches, sent missionaries worldwide and laid a foundation for future movements, including the modern worship movement, prayer movement and church planting movement.

I believe we are perfectly poised for such a move of God again in our time. We stand on the brink of history, waiting for bold voices to declare again that salvation and satisfaction are found in Jesus alone. Never before our time have so many hearts been expectant for Revival. The time is now.

The Jesus Movement forms a unique template for revival in our generation because it stirs our imagination in a way we can envision! It is more recent, more culturally close to today and the conditions are amazingly similar. It was a youth movement, spearheaded by young radicals but also submitted to spiritual fathers and mothers. It was beautifully unifying and interdenominational. And it was unafraid to be creative, counter-cultural and unconventional. Lastly, it was not built on a few charismatic leadership personalities but on a decentralized model of empowerment that allowed it to spread like wildfire. All these themes and many more stir my heart like never before. We need a NEW Jesus Movement. Not as a carbon copy of the old but as an inspiring pattern on which to expand.

Though it may sound arrogant, I believe it is part of my inheritance to see and be part of a new Jesus movement. Both of my parents were saved in the original Jesus Movement in the sixties and met each other in church. The affect of that move of God is very personal to me: I am alive and know God because of it. God moved greatly in that era and it is now our joyful responsibility to carry that same torch of revival forward into our generation. I must play my part in rousing us from our sleep to enter into our inheritance. And so must you.

A Call To Consecration

I am gripped by the need to call our generation to radical consecration for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. I am not the only voice raising this call and certainly not the most influential. But I cannot get away from the conviction that every voice matters and every person has a part to play. Many leaders across the global church have voiced a sense that God is unleashing a new movement of radical Jesus followers. My hope is that this book will join with those voices and together we will unleash the greatest move of God in history, ushering in the return of Jesus and a new age for humanity.

Outlined below are 7 Declarations I am calling my generation and those who will follow to. More than empty words, I believe these declarations represent a consecration of the heart that will be seen more than heard. These are not things we say with our mouth, they are mantras we embody with action! They are marks that set apart a generation hungry to be part of the next great move of God.

7 Declarations to Awaken Hunger for God

#1 DESIRE: I am satisfied in God and hungry for more.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6

Prayer: “Align my desires God and stir up greater hunger in me to know you.”

#2 IDENTITY: I am a child of God.

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”  Romans 8:16

Prayer: “Holy Spirit, remind me of my identity as a child of God and let that inform my every action.”

#3 DEPENDENCE: I am dependent on God’s power.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

Prayer: “God, I need you today. Abide in me and empower me to do your will.”

#4 HOLINESS: I am set apart for God’s purpose.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Prayer: “Help me get rid of anything that doesn’t please you or distracts me from your purposes.”

#5 COMMUNITY: I am committed to spiritual family.

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…” Hebrews 10:24-25

Prayer: “Open my ears to instruction from my leaders and my mouth to encourage others.”

#6 EVANGELISM: I am a carrier of good news.

“He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15

Prayer: “Make me a light to those around me and help me love like Jesus!”

#7 DISCIPLESHIP: I am made to multiply.

And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.Matthew 28:19

Prayer: “Help me expand your Kingdom today by influencing a few people to follow you fully!”
